Universalism (replik till Prudentius)

"God willed to join the peoples and the realms
together under one harmonious rule"
So wrote the Roman christian long ago
It falls on me to warn he was a fool

A single hegemonic faith for Earth
The eschaton at last immanentized
Blood mixed by intermarriage, tribes dissolved
replaced with equal brothers under Christ

Repentant for Her selfish, conquering past,
one Empire, its army shielding all,
now pure and just shall stand astride the world
and cull the heathen rogues who shun her call

"The unenlightened old ancestral ways
belong not in this universal home
which welcomes any man of any race!"
...Then Alaric and his Visigoths sacked Rome

This old foreboding story doesn't tell
how many Romans turned the other cheek
and looked on meekly as their city fell
but Julius Caesar would have called them weak

He conquered under Mars and Jupiter
for purposes Prudentius would condemn
These Gods along with Victory herself
abandoned Rome as Rome abandoned them

Today the Universalists are back
with Progress in the place of Providence
with liberal democracy as Christ
and all the selfsame grandiose pretense

"Our forefathers were not as good as us,
as holy, as enlightened or as pure
Our values are the final and the last
superior to the ones that came before

In bygone years White men would rule the world
by right of conquest, plunder, dominate
Their civilizing burden a facade
supremacy intact, provoking hate

But now we'll join the peoples and the realms
together under one harmonious rule
All nations, borders, cultures, difference
erased and mixed in one big blended pool!

A universal brotherhood of man
with peace for all who make this Earth their home
absolving Europe of Her sinful past"
...And then barbarian foreigners sacked Rome
