New year and new laws – from January 1, you can no longer throw your discarded old socks in the household garbage. It will be more difficult to cheat on the VAB and anonymous testimony will be allowed in the courts.

Anonymous witnesses

Witnesses will now be able to be heard anonymously about suspected crimes that can lead to at least two years in prison. This can happen both during police investigations and in courts, if there is a tangible risk that the witness or the witness's relatives will be exposed to serious crime.

Hotel permit abolished

A permit will no longer be required to open a hotel or guesthouse. However, you must report to the police if you want to start such a business.

All textile waste must be sorted out and stored separately from other waste and left at the municipalities' collection points. This also applies to private individuals and concerns waste consisting of textile clothing, home textiles, interior textiles, textile bags and textile accessories.

More charging points

Heated buildings that are not residential buildings and that have more than 20 parking spaces must have at least one charging point for electric vehicles. The new requirement is that the requirement applies not only to new buildings but also to existing buildings. The charging points do not need to be accessible to the public.

Vab reports to the Swedish Tax Agency

Employers will be required to report to the Swedish Tax Agency every month when employees have been at home due to parental leave or caring for a sick child.

Strengthened rights for children

The Parental Code is being amended to strengthen children's protection against violence and other violations. The starting point should be what is best for the child in matters of custody, housing and access. Particular importance is given to the risk of the child or someone else in the family being exposed to violence or other abuse.

Taxes are being reduced

The tax on petrol and diesel is being reduced. The earned income tax deduction is being strengthened and for those with higher incomes, the marginal tax is also being reduced, since the phasing out of the earned income tax deduction for them is being abolished. Taxes are also being reduced for pensioners.

More expensive with unsecured loans

For unsecured loans, unsecured loans, the interest deduction will be gradually reduced. During the coming year, only 50 percent of the interest is deductible. In 2026, the interest deduction will disappear completely.

Root and square tax are being tightened

The ceiling for the root deduction, which was temporarily at SEK 75,000, is now returning to SEK 50,000. There have been separate ceilings for the root and square deductions for a while, but now the common ceiling is back. The maximum deduction for root and square deductions is SEK 75,000 from the turn of the year.
