of Quiet Dreams & a Lake

We were standing on the shoreline
waiting for a moment to arrive
the first light or at least
another quiet dream
of any other kind

You spoke like there was something
you just barely understood
that you were wearing
like lightning just beneath your skin
or thunder on the other side of the sky
and I remember you saying
it was a quiet dream to carry
but at least it gave us
a real reason to listen

From another perspective I guess we were mad
but seen with our own eyes we were just hoping
to skate away on the thin ice of a new day
knowing it could break from our weight
just two lost souls fleeing as fast as they can
from themselves

Yes, madly perhaps
but at the very least living
it's all too easy to forget
it's not enough
just to survive

So, as morning burns the Western sky
in clearest flame
everyone knows the Eastern night awaits
through smokescreens made from long lost love
and burning cigarettes
we looked towards the end of days
coming like a quiet dream
gently our way

&

I looked at you and said ever so softly
"Then let the night arrive"
seeing a thousand midnights bloom
in the way you smiled
Like you were the only one crying
because you knew in the end
everyone's just waiting to say goodbye

(I was lost inside a miracle
the day you said you thought
you could let it all go)

Yes, I was caught in a soft web
that you wove from your longing
dyed pale blue from regret
over the gentlest white
left to hang outside the window
of the furthest bedroom
on the highest floor

So there we were
on such an ethereal day
both of us lost in the miracle
in a quiet dream we'd made
chasing the first light
over the thinnest ice
madly daring everything to break
from under our weight

(fleeing as fast as we can from ourselves)
