The Breath Inwards

I'm all alone on this rock in space,
with the breath inwards.

Somewhere out there is a handsome young man in a trenchcoat,
panting,
breath outwards,
trying to catch up.
I'm too fast for him.
His feet get stuck in the mud.
There is no mud for me.

He ran to Abigail, though he hardly knew her before the castle was built,
even less now.
He cried on her shoulder,
she patted his back
and whispered words of comfort in his ear.
If only he knew I could see.

The game continues.
He returns with strengthened resolve.
Determined this time,
gaze unwavering,
and he can almost reach out
and touch me
- I am at the horizon.

But I am the horizon.

And I'm all alone on this rock in space,
with the breath inwards.
