Heart is beating my body
from inside,
caught like a wild animal
in the rib cage
The letters I punch
are staples in my skin
after a major mental surgery,
repeated each day
as I wake
to the impossible feat
of decency
and a sense of purpose,
riding a wakeness wave caught,
destined to slam onto the evening beach
of Ithaka,
my body a piece of driftwood
under a starry numbness
Let me see the light!
Let me put up a fight!
Let me beat up all gods till' they beg for mercy,
all the way from Long Island to the island of Jersey
The future and the past
are here at last
They're in the Now,
don't ask me how
It's no diligent game anymore
My mind is leaking,
my thoughts are reaking;
my self-awareness is sore
Let me see the light!
Let me put up a fight!
Let me beat up all gods till' they beg for mercy,
all the way from Long Island to the island of Jersey
My head crawls up,
my feet stay below,
the world spreads out,
I wiggle my toe
The years are all in the before;
I pinched them and beat them and tore
I put up resistence, thirty, forty miles a day
I still do what I do, do what I may
Let me see the light!
Let me put up a fight!
Let me beat up all gods till' they beg for mercy,
all the way from Long Island to the island of Jersey
There's been a shooting
down in the street
I go out looting
for blood and meat
I find a body all covered up,
it looks familiar, my god, it's me,
I feel all agitated , I yell for a cop,
with eyes full of blood it's darn hard to see
Let me see the light!
Let me put up a fight!
Let me beat up all gods till' they beg for mercy,
all the way from Long Island to the island of Jersey
The cranes call in the middle of the night,
leave me lying in The Ship of Dreams, ajar
I'm never to old to fight and I might,
though I'm mentally dressed in feathers and tar
My gaze is caught in the distance somewhere
The world is turning, I sense it in the air
I get up, find a place in the midst of everywhere
and place myself on an old wooden chair
Let me see the light!
Let me put up a fight!
Let me beat up all gods till' they beg for mercy,
all the way from Long Island to the island of Jersey
