To light the canopy

Who told the wave to tumble?
Who lit the sun god's eye?
As Rome was built to crumble,
for whom, to what, and why?
What set the earth to breathe
in grass beneath my feet?

'Neath eyes a lawless nation
of wild imagination
would mirror the foretold;
the sea reset to tumble
and roll away, and rumble
the balustrades of old,
yet never brought to breach
the parapet, I reach
with frail and failing hand
beyond this wailing land,
which whispers to the sea
and lights the canopy.
