Here you rest, Paavo,
in your beloved soil
I am your son
borne underneath the heart of the woman
which became yours,
yours in the toil and the famine

Mine is a heritage to be grateful for
I inherited what you owned, Paavo,
the wastelands,
where the young crops froze to ice,
and I inherited the same hard
defiance against fate, which you possessed
I inherited the strength of your fist,
the fist, which held hard the spade and the lever,
the fist, which had calluses in your deed of cultivation
And I inherited the strength of your back
I know it could be broken, but never bent

What heritage to inherit!
The strength of your hand
and the defiant stare
and the whole destitution,
hidden in the patches of land which you broke
as well as your life,
the whole, whole destitution,
the hunger in your mouth
and the hunger within your soul

Här vilar du, Paavo,
i din kära jord
Jag är din son
buren under hjärtat av den kvinna
som blev din,
din i mödan och i svälten

Jag har fått ett arv att tacka för
Jag ärvde vad du ägde, Paavo,
ödemarken,
där den unga grödan frös till is,
och jag ärvde samma hårda
trots mot ödet, som du ägde
Jag ärvde styrkan i din näve,
näven, som grep hårt i spett och spade,
näven, som blev valkig i din odlargärning
Och jag ärvde styrkan i din rygg
Jag vet den kunde brytas, aldrig böjas

Vilket arv att ärva!
Styrkan i din hand
och trotset i din blick
och hela nöden,
gömd såväl i tegarna du bröt
som i ditt liv,
