THE EDDA: The Prophecy ov the Vale, Part I

***
~
I.>>Behear me ye all
houses ov the holy,
greater and lesser
sons ov Heimdall;
thy wisheth, Walfather,
that well I forsayeth
the ancient rhymes,
the first, I recall.
~
II.Giants, in primeval tides
brought forth, I so remembereth,
as me in forlorn
nurtured haveth;
worlds ov nine I so remembereth,
and that which were in the nine,
measuregiving tree
beneath the dirt so deep.
~
III.In all ages morning,
as when Ymer liveth,
was neither sand, nor sea,
nor billows ov the cold;
the earth existed not,
sky ov naught up above;
existed didst an abyss ov hollow yawning
but nowhere grass to find.
~
IV.Before the sons ov Bur's belifted
the lands to heights,
the ones that renowned in multifold
Midgaard created.
The Sun beamed
in the South over rocks,
and the herbs ov green
groweth in the ground.
~
V.The Southern Sun
in liaison with the Moon
at the right hand
over the skyline yonder.
The Sun didst not knoweth,
where halls she hath,
the Moon didst not knoweth,
what power he hath,
the stars didst not knoweth,
where to glimmer and shine.
~
VI.All powers then draweth
to their seats ov judgement,
holy gods ov the highest,
and held a deliberation;
to night and the beloweth
names they giveth,
becalled the morning
and midday too,
afternoon and eve,
with years to reckon.
~
VII.The AEsirs met
upon the Mound ov Ides,
timbered high
the temples and altars,
blacksmith's forge they built,
gems ov jewelry they made,
procured tongs
and created tools.
~
VIII.On the garth with backgammon-games
full ov joy they played,
poverty in gold
were non-existent,
'til maidens ov turs
came in three,
mighty in multitude
maidens, from the giantworld.
~
IX.All powers then draweth
to their seats ov judgement,
holy gods ov the highest,
and held a deliberation,
who midget's host
created would
ov breakers ov blood
and the bones ov Blain.
~
X.There were Modsogner begotten
the most prominient
ov dwarfs in all
and Duvin the second;
they made plenty ov
images ov the human kind,
these dwarfs, ov the dirt,
as Duvin said.
~
XI.Nye and Nide,
Nordre and Sudre,
Austre and Vaestre,
Alltjov, Dvalin,
Bivor, Bavor,
Bombur, Nore,
An and Anar,
Ae, Mjodvitner.
~
XII.Veig and Gandalv,
Vindalv, Train,
Taeck and Torin,
Tro, Vitr and Lit,
Na and Nyrad.
Now I have the dwarfs
---Regin and Radsvid---
rightly spoken ov.
~
XIII.File, Kile,
Funden, Nale,
Hepte, Vile,
Hanar, Svior,
Fra, Hornbore,
Fraeg and Lone,
Aurvang, Jare,
Eikinskjalde
~
XIV.Time it is for dwarfs
in the hordes ov Dvalin
mankind to lead
to Lovar in pedigree;
those who the sandfields' throne
to themselves sought
to the gravelgrounds
from the rock ov origin.
~
XV.There were Draupner
and Dolgtraser,
Ha, Haugspore,
Laevang, Gloe,
Dore, Ore,
Duv, Andvare
Skirver, Virver
Skavid, Ae.
~
XVI.Alf and Yngve,
Eikinskjalde,
Fjalar and Froste,
Finn and Ginnar.
Always will remember,
as long as humans shall live,
this succession ov length
ov the ancestors ov Lovar.
~
XVII.Till from that horde
AEsirs by three,
full ov strength and love's sentiment,
came upon a house.
They found upon land
with scarce ability
Ask and Embla
lacking life's aim and destination.
~
XVIII.Spirit they possessed not,
judgement had not,
nor sap ov life, nor sound,
nor vivid colourings.
Spirit gave Odin,
judgement Hoener,
sap ov life gave Lodur
and vivid colourings.
~
XIX.An ash-tree I know standeth,
Yggdrasil is it's name
a vast giantic tree, ov the white sands
overshowered.
From there cometh the dew,
as in the valleys falleth,
it forever stands green
above the Well ov Wyrd.
~
XX.From there cometh maidens,
that much knoweth,
out ov the hall by three,
that under the tree stands.
The first one was Wyrd,
Verdandi the second,
upon wood one carved
the name ov Skuld ov the third one.
Laws they set,
life they selected
for the children ov mankind,
the fate ov men.
~
XXI.The pitched battle she remembers
the first ov the world,
when they with spears
Gullveig pierced
and in the Hall ov the Highest
burned her.
Three times they burned
the three times borned,
often, not seldom,
yet she still liveth.
~
XXII.Heid was her name,
and to the houses she came,
was a well prophesying vale.
She blessed the wands,
she conjured, everywhere she could,
conjured insanity.
Always she was beloved
by the wicked women.
~
XXIII.All powers then draweth
to their seats ov judgement,
holy gods ov the highest,
and held a deliberation,
if the AEsirs should
harm bestoweth
or all the gods
retribution behold.
~
XXIV.Spear slungeth Odin
and among the flock sent,
that pitched battle also
was the first ov the world.
Broken were the breastwork
upon the stronghold ov AEsirs,
across the captured battle-fields
the vanes could reach.
~
XXV.All powers then draweth
to their seats ov judgement,
holy gods ov the highest,
and held a deliberation,
who all the air
with blemish hath composite
or to the giant race
Od's maiden hath giveth.
~
XXVI.Only Thor struck
in defying bravery,
he seldom calmly sits,
as such like he behears.
Oaths were broken,
word and promise,
all covens ov weight,
as hath between them been exchanged.
~
XXVII.She knows Heimdall's
sound ov horn depends
upon the skyhigh
holy tree.
Upon this she sees the flow
ov a sandblent rapid
from Walfather's pawn.
Knoweth ye more still and what?
~
XXVIII.Alone she sat outside,
as the AEsirs' god ov horror,
the elderly, came
and into her eye stared.
>>What do ye ask ov me?
Why do ye tempt me?
All I know, Odin,
where your eye you hid
in the Well ov Mimer,
the much renowned.
Mead every morning
Mimer drinks
ov the Walfather's pawn.>>
Knoweth ye more still and what?
~
XXIX.Gaveth the Father ov Host to her
neckgold and rings,
was given words ov wisdom
and wraiths ov wands;
she looked in the far
in every world.
--------
XXX.She saw walkyries,
begotten from the far,
ready to make
the ride to Godtjod.
Skuld holdeth shield,
and Skogul was the second,
Gunn, Hild, Gondul
and Geirskogul.
Now the Harryings'
maidens ov host are mentioned,
walkyries, ready
to ride upon the earth.
~
XXXI.I looked to Balder,
the blood-god,
Odin's child,
a fate is clandestine.
High above the plains
thin stood grown
and very beautiful
the mistlerod.
~
XXXII.From that tree, that seemed
a sapling to be,
a sprout ov sorrow shot out,
and the marksman was Hoeder.
The brother ov Balder
was born shortly,
the Odinson fought
but one night old.
~
XXXIII.His hands he never washed,
his head he never combed,
until on the pyre he bore
Balder's foe.
But Frigg wept
in the Halls ov Fen
over Valhall's woe.
Knoweth ye more still and what?
~
Snorre Sturlasson ca 800-1200 AD.
