son of darkness

Dawn wakes, slow and soft
Stretching delicate fingers of light
To relieve the city of it’s shadows

I watch with awe and wild longing
Untouched by the sun’s soft glow
Even as warmth reaches for my gloved hands

My fingers curl away unbidden
Trained beyond my wish
Shrinking from the sunlight
Like a virgin from a lover

In sharp defiance I suddenly stare
Letting white wash over this darkness
Blind my eyes until there is only sight
And truth

Using shadow as a cloak
I shrink from the moment
And remember my duty

He comes and I nod
With respectful nuances
Always quiet, dark
Hiding the secret:

This morning
I saw the light.
